-You will have a background in Mechanical or Aerospace or System Engineering, or a related field and an enquiring and rigorous approach to research together with a strong intellect and disciplined work habits.
-Training will be given in system engineering and complex system design. You will become a skilled communicator, comfortable in an international situation.
-Good team-working, observational and communication skills are essential.

PhD Scholarship Position Open for Students of Following Countries: UK and EU
Scholarship Description: Applications are invited for a research studentship in the field of ‘Requirements Engineering’, leading to the award of a PhD degree. The post is supported by a Case Award bursary and fees (at the UK/EU student rate) provided by Rolls-Royce plc. and EPSRC. The studentship is for three and a half years from October 2012 and is available for UK and EU candidates meeting the Research Council criterion of having been resident in the UK for the previous three years but other sources of funding might be available for highly qualified students.The research involves development and validation of a robust framework for requirements and design rationale that can be integrated into the product architecture and logical/functional architecture for a tightly-coupled system such as a large gas-turbine. The work will investigate use of Design Engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering principles and associated informal and formal techniques such as the Issue Based Information System (IBIS) and the Systems Modelling Language (SysML). The research will enable a greater understanding of the flow-down of requirements through the system, sub-system and component levels, and how the design decisions made at each level address requirements from higher levels and lead to the definition of additional requirements for lower-levels. It will be performed in collaboration with other UK universities and Rolls-Royce plc.
